2012 construction waste disposal targets set to be achieved
According to the latest figures, the construction industry is making good progress in meeting its waste disposal target, set by the Strategic Forum for Construction, of cutting commercial waste to landfill by 50 per cent.
Contractors such as Sir Robert McAlpine, Costain and Balfour Beatty have signed up to WRAP's Halving Waste to Landfill initiative and WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) has reported that 32 construction contractors with a total annual spend of over £21 billion within the reporting period are achieving their targets.
The combined 2009 figures for the companies demonstrate a decrease of 28% in the Construction Demolition & Excavation waste sent to landfill during 2008 and 2009, a drop of almost 1m tonnes over the previous year.
Signatories for WRAP's initiative are reducing their waste to landfill through a range of measures including:
- Using their procurement process to set requirements for their supply chains.
- Reducing waste with more efficient material delivery logistics, storage and handling on site.
- Recovering more waste through improved segregation.
- Working with more efficient waste management contractors.
Lord Henley, the Waste and Recycling Minister, said: "The construction industry is a vital force for economic growth and like all industries, it must itself change and adapt in order to prosper."We'll be looking to make sure that we take action which helps the construction sector grow and thrive, and which also delivers those wider sustainability benefits through changing not only our own behaviour - but that of others too."
