The Dos And Don'ts Of Commercial Skip Hire

When hiring a skip, it is important to know exactly what you want to use it for and how the process works. Whilst skip hire is a relatively simple waste disposal solution, it is important to ensure that you comply with legislation and fulfil your Duty of Care.

  • Deal with hazardous and non-hazardous waste correctly
  • Used a licensed waste contractor such as Skippy to collect, recycle, recover and dispose of waste
  • Make all considerable efforts to deal with your waste responsibly and in line with UK waste law

Skip Hire Checklist

When hiring a skip there are a number of things you need to take into consideration before you arrange delivery on site. Take a look at our skip hire do's and don'ts.

✔ Check Your Paperwork – If placing a skip on a public road, you will need to obtain a permit from the local council. Application requires your address and the start date/delivery date. Skip licenses are valid for 7 days at which point they can be renewed. At Skippy we can usually obtain a permit on your behalf if required.

✔ Get The Right Size – Skips are measured in cubic yards ranging from 2-3 yard mini skips for domestic use right up to 40 yard roll on roll off skips for construction sites. Both have their limitations so make sure to check access and available space.

✔ Recycle – Where possible we aim to recycle all construction waste disposed of in our skips. Make sure to provide us with as much information as possible about the waste you are disposing of, this way we can ensure the most efficient service is provided to you.

Do's And Don'ts

✘ Don't overfill the skip. This is dangerous and in some cases, makes it impossible for it to be lifted.

✘ Don't have fires in the skips. This is illegal and you will be liable for replacement or repair costs.

✘ Don't mix hazardous waste in with inert or general waste as this will incur additional costs and may mean we are unable to take your waste away.
