Right Waste, Right Place is the name of a brand new, year-long campaign launched as a partnership between the Environmental Services Association (ESA) and the Chartered Institute of Wastes Management (CIWM). The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness and the profile associated with Duty Of Care requirements across a range of different industries.

This campaign will see the development of a brand new website, along with a range of other key materials to ensure that small and medium enterprises understand the importance of obeying relevant waste legislation. Despite the growing number of businesses making the most of ethical construction waste management from reliable sources, there are still companies and organisations not ensuring their waste is removed and disposed of by compliant waste companies.

The Impact And Cost Of Waste Crime On The UK Economy

Waste crime may not seem like a major problem from the outside, but those involved in the waste industry realise how much of an impact this illegal activity has on the UK economy. A recent report undertaken by the Environmental Services Association Education Trust (ESAET) revealed the disturbing cost that this criminality has on the market, and its undoubted links to much wider criminal activity.

Criminal waste providers tend to undercut typical market rates, ensuring that they receive contracts. They are then able to lower their operating costs by avoiding Landfill Tax by operating illegal waste sites and misclassifying waste. Unfortunately, for many years, this has been a low-risk, high-reward kind of criminal behaviour that is targeted at disposal contracts rather than recycling solutions.

Waste Crimes Effect On The Environment

Waste from all kinds of businesses and organisations can commonly contain hazardous materials, which is the reason behind the heavy regulation of the waste industry. Chemical waste, food waste and potentially dangerous general waste can all pose a threat to the public and the local environment. For example, there were six illegal waste sites across Lancashire which the Environment Agency and Fire and Rescue Service had to wear protective clothing and breathing apparatus to safely recover.

On this occasion, more than 100 chemical drums full of acids and crushed tablets as well as certain materials which would become explosive upon contact with water hidden beneath leaking roofs.
