A recent trend has seen London’s hipsters and artists taking driftwood and wood they find in skips and actively recycling it themselves. How, you might ask? Well, they’re turning it into practical and unique furniture of their very own. According to two artists/home ware entrepreneurs, more and more people are turning their backs on cheap, imported furniture and are focused on creating their own, or buying their own from creative start-ups like Forest-and-Found.

Obviously, as providers of nationwide skip hire, this topic is very close to our hearts, and we love to see people making the most of waste materials. At the very least, it means we don’t have to sort them when we come to pick up our skips!

Forest-And-Found: Waste And Wooden Furniture!

Forest-and-Found was started by Max Bainbridge and Abigail Booth, who met whilst they were studying at the Chelsea College of Art and Design. They produce hand-crafted items in a workshop, in the back garden of their home in Walthamstow, using waste wood found on the ground, in bins or in skips.

Bainbridge said that the whole idea of the business is “to be sustainable. We want to be supportive of the natural environment.” What might surprise some people is that, rather than just being an art project or a novelty, the couple – both 24 – have managed t turn their work into a sustainable business which, over the past 6 months, has grown prodigiously in size to the point where the two artists can dedicate themselves full-time to the endeavour.

Wasted Art And Practical Furniture

The young couple aren’t the only ones making the most of the amount of work that we create on a daily basis. The Islington-born artist, Yinka Ilori, is developing unique design pieces using furniture that the finds in skips across the capital.

The 28-year-old artist and designer has said that he draws on his Nigerian heritage to create colourful chairs, which he hopes people will use for functional or decorative purposes. When talking about his inspirations, he said “I used to see chairs on the street which I would re-upholster – that is where the idea started. Now, I often get them from skips or craft shops”.

He went on to say that “there is so much out there that gets thrown away, so much waste that you can use. If you learn more about how to use what you have then you can save furniture.”

Ilori has also managed to make a living from his creations, selling them through his business Yinksdesigns.

These creative people have managed to make a living by refurbishing and recycling waste that they’ve found on the street or in skips and, here at Skippy Nationwide, we extremely glad to see people making the most of this wasted material.
