According to the new Labour party waste management policy document, ‘Resource security: jobs and growth from waste’, more challenging recycling targets could be set throughout the UK.

Green Waste Management

Launched by the Shadow Environment Secretary, Mary Creagh, and the Shadow Waste Minister, Gavin Shuker, the new waste management policy criticised the existing coalition government’s policy. Commenting on the ‘stalled’ state of waste management, Labour called the 2011 Waste Review, a ‘missed opportunity to drive innovation and boost investor confidence’. Key issues raised in the review were those surrounding the UK’s current recycling targets, and whether they can meet EU obligations by 2020.
According to the new policy, if the Labour party was successful in the next election, they would also:
  • Create more jobs within the resource industry
  • Promote manufacturing responsibility and environmental commitments
  • Encourage compliance
  • Support innovation in zero to waste initiatives

 Industry Support Waste

In response to the proposed waste management policy, Chairman David Palmer-Jones of the Environmental Services Association commented: “Labour has rightly grasped the opportunity for the waste and resources industry to be an engine of green growth. The challenge now will be to develop detailed proposals that provide a sound framework for businesses to invest in building a circular economy.” A work in progress, the policy has not yet been implemented.
