Illegal waste disposal, otherwise known as fly tipping, has risen significantly due to the ever-increasing costs of commercial waste collection.. Although fly tippers will be punished if caught, there are concerns that if councils continue to increase the fees on skip permits, the situation will be difficult to control.

Fly Tipping Is On The Increase

A survey that looked into 148 council boroughs across the UK revealed that over the past 5 years, skip permits have increased in cost by 650%. Between 2009 and 2010, fly tipping has increased by as much as 297% in the city of London alone.

Cabinet member Steve Double said "Historically, whenever we have been in a period of recession, economically, we've found that this type of thing increases as businesses try to avoid the cost of disposing of their waste appropriately." An increase in fly-tipping can be a result of a number of economic factors, including an increase in costs for commercial businesses. Since the introduction of the new van permit system, rise in landfill tax, and increase in skip permits, businesses have struggled to keep the cost of their waste collection down.

In 2013, fly-tipping cost Cornwall Council approximately £200,000 more to clear up than the year before. An increase of almost 119% since 2011/2012, the cost collection of illegally dumped waste in 2012/2013 rose to £364,533. Ms Lister, a significant landowner in mid Cornwall said that fly-tipping near Imerys' entrances and access points have become "common hotspots" for dumping waste. The dumping of commercial waste has increased significantly, often including bags of rubble and concrete.
