In a speech given to the Green Economy Forum on April 23rd, Janez Potocnik, European Commissioner for Environment, outlined plans for improvements in critical raw material waste management.

Reducing Consumption With Waste Management

During the event in Dublin, businesses from across all sectors of the waste management industry were brought together. In his speech to the forum, Janez Potocnik  made the statement:

“If our society goes on consuming resources at the same rate as we do now, by 2050, globally we will need three times more material resources, and 70 per cent more food, feed and fibre.”

In response to his claim, Potocnik described the new EU proposals for encouraging efficient management of our existing resources. To achieve this, a European Resource Efficiency Platform would be created, enabling businesses, politicians and NGOs to collaborate on improving efficiency.  In June 2013, the platform will announce a series of short term policy recommendations.  Potocnik also discussed the potential monetary benefits of improved raw material efficiency, estimating that full implementation of the EU waste legislation could save £60 million a year, and increase the annual turnover of the EU waste management sector by £35 million.
