How do you know whether a Site Waste Management Plan is required for any of your upcoming commercial waste projects, and what steps are involved to ensure an accurate plan is in place?

Who Needs A Site Waste Management Plan?

Anyone involved in a demolition or construction project over a certain budget (£300,000 or more) is legally obligated to produce a SWMP

Site Waste Management Plan

The higher the value of the project, the more detailed the SWMP needs to be. Penalties for not having a Site Waste Management Plan can be up to £50,000 and liability doesn’t always fall to the company. If an individual is deemed to be at fault, that individual can be held liable.

According to Defra, "Site Waste Management Plans apply to all aspects of construction work including preparatory work such as demolition and excavation. They are required for civil engineering and engineering projects as well as projects involving the maintenance, alteration and decoration of existing structures.

The installation, maintenance or removal of all related services such as electrical, gas, water, sewage and telecommunications are also subject to this requirement. Routine maintenance operations such as gully cleaning or grass cutting, as opposed to maintenance of a structure, do not fall within this scope."
