Change In Rates Of Waste Disposal Tax

Landfill tax, introduced into UK legislation in 1996, was designed to reduce the amount of waste disposed via landfill. There are two rates of tax, standard and lower rate, chargeable for each tonne of waste disposed of. The lower rate applies to less polluting wastes such as, rocks and soils, concrete materials, minerals, furnace slags, ash and low activity inorganic compounds (inert waste).. The standard rate tax then applies to all other taxable waste. In 1996 when the tax was implemented, standard rate and lower rate tax were charged at £7 and £2 per tonne respectively. By April 2013, rates will rise to £72 per tonne for standard waste, and £2.50 per tonne for low rate waste.
