Policies for managing plastic waste have been outdated and have been a threat to the health and life of people, wildlife and the environment.  In wake of this, a group of 10 scientists from the University of California; the National Centre for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis in Santa Barbara; and Plymouth University, have called for an updated policy on plastics in the Feb. 13 online version of the journal Nature.

It’s Time To Label Plastics For Hazardous Waste Disposal

According to the article in this journal, less than half of 280 million tonnes of plastic produced globally in 2012 was either recycled or ended up in a landfill. Furthermore about 150 million tonnes of plastic ended up as litter.  If no action is taken, then the Global Environment Facility will have to deal with 33 billion tonnes of plastic by 2050.

They have asked to label plastics for hazardous waste disposal rather than solid waste disposal.  They believed classifying plastics as hazardous waste would reduce the amount of plastics produced from 33 billion tonnes to four billion tonnes by 2050.

While it is too early to see if the government will embrace the idea of labelling plastics for hazardous waste disposal, if you need help with managing your hazardous waste materials turn to Skippy.
